I like the way it looks, but I can't help thinking it's just a taller Outback.

EDIT: Impreza, whatever.

I think it's a taller Impreza.

Taller Impreza.

The Outback is already that tall now since it's morphed into a light-truck/wagon.

It's a lifted Impreza. Completely same interior to my Impreza. I don't think it is very fast given my '12 hits 60 in about 9 seconds. Also CVT.

It's a lifted Impreza hatch with some plastic cladding. Nothing special about it IMO. And from what I hear the engine is under powered.

My wife digs these. Mostly the wheels that grabbed her attention. We test drove one briefly and it was entirely serviceable. Not fast, not slow, not quiet or loud, no particularly noteworthy handling characteristics, and the CVT wasn't as bad as I thought it'd be. 5 speed is available of course.

As already stated, Impreza on stilts. Buddy test drove one last week and wasn't impressed. He really like the Outback, Legacy on stilts (I think and too lazy to look it up).

Taller Impreza, shorter Outback.

Here in my part of Canada they have been a huge hit, I see these a lot more than any other Subaru model since the XV was introduced. It all has to do with ground clearance for winter driving and AWD. Once a week or so I see one like the one pictured above but with the chrome on the wheels done in black too, I want it!

I think you mean Impreza.

The XV is to the Impreza as the Outback is to the Legacy.

The Outback is still a jacked up Legacy wagon. The only difference is Subaru no longer offers the regular un-Outbacked Legacy wagon.

My opinion, but it could be biased because I'm an owner.

In 2010 I bought a Nissan cube, my first ever new car. The cube wasn't bad for what it was, and had a ton of room in it (particularly if you removed the seats). But I just didn't feel in tune with the vehicle. And it was like driving a sofa. So, in June of 2011 I traded the cube in on a Mazda3 with the 2.5. The Mazda offered the things that I was missing from the cube. But I wasn't crazy about the gas mileage, and it just felt like a car to me, I wasn't really in tune with it. In April of 2013 I traded the 3 in on a Crosstrek. I had finally found the vehicle that spoke to me.

I love the Crosstrek. It is a little slower than the Mazda, but it has enough power to get out of it's own way. And after about 10k, the engine really seemed to loosen up a bit. I have the CVT with the paddle shifters and it's a perfectly acceptable transmission. Once you learn the nuances of the transmission and how to shift it (you just get the feel for it), you really shouldn't have any issue with the car being too slow.

The ride height is just about perfect. It's high enough off the ground that you can see in traffic, but not so high that you're annoying everyone around you with some monster you can't see around. The vehicle rides quite nice too. It absorbs road imperfections much better than the cube or Mazda3 did, 0r my wife's Corolla. Also, the added ride height over an Impreza makes this thing a beast in the snow. We had considerably higher snowfall than normal last year, and with the Symetrical AWD and Winter Tires, this vehicle was unstoppable.

Gas mileage isn't too bad in the vehicle. In my normal daily commute, I'm close to 29mpg. If I'm on a long highway trip, I can get close to 34mpg. I have a little over 25k on my Crosstrek now. It's only made one unscheduled stop to the dealer, which had to do with a faulty Cam Position Sensor. Once that was fixed the vehicle drove like new again.

The only down side I can say about the vehicle is that the factory audio system sucks. I'm not an audiophile by any stretch, but even just listening to sports talk radio I could tell it was lacking. The factory speakers are some of the cheapest paper cones I've seen in 15 years, with tiny magnets. While replacing the speakers, add some sound deadening to the doors. It makes a pretty big difference in road noise.

That's my opinion on the Crosstrek. It's a great vehicle for the segment it's in IMHO.

What is it that people like about then as opposed to an Impreza or a Forrester?
